Why do you need an Editor?

First impressions are everything, just as they are in real life. A book filled with errors can hurt your credibility, and trust us when we say that no one likes getting bad reviews. Sometimes a writer can be too close to the story to see any mistakes or flaws that an experienced eye can help point out. A reader sees a story differently than its creator and one of the hardest things about the publishing process is accepting editorial critiquing from an outside source.

There are several types of editorial help:

  • Line Editing
  • Copy Editing
  • Developmental Editing
  • Proofreading
  • Manuscript Evaluation

Line Editing & Copy Editing

This stage includes addressing grammatical errors, punctuation, spelling, past tense vs. present tense, Subject Verb Agreement (ex: She was/they were, Josh plays/my friends play), common misuse of words (ex: your/you’re, etc.) We also search for awkward sentence structures, showing vs. telling, repetitive word use, dialogue, flow, and overall readability. This is also used to check consistencies with names, dates, and other plot elements throughout the manuscript.

Developmental Editing

Sometimes a manuscript needs a little extra help with reworking problematic areas or gaps in the story. In some cases, passages or characters should be deleted all together if they bring nothing to the table. This can be done all while still maintaining the voice of the author.

Proofreading

The final step in the editing process is proofreading, allowing one last line by line edit to better polish the document. Expelling any remaining typos or errors is the best way to prevent spoiling the experience of your future readers.

Manuscript Evaluation

This is where a complete a read through as an unbiased reader is done to determine areas that might need improvements. The strengths, weaknesses, plot holes, character arcs, storyline, setting and writing style are primary focuses. This does not usually include an editorial report with revisions.

What is a book trailer?

This is a captivating promotional video designed to create excitement and interest in your book. A well executed trailer immerses potential readers in your story’s world before they even turn the first page.

  • It’s a powerful tool to boost your book’s visibility by broadening marketability
  • It creates a multi-sensory experience that evokes sight and sound rather than just engaging the mind. This can help your story stay with the viewer longer.
  • Appeal to new audiences or non-readers, people who might otherwise not pick up a book but could be intrigued by a trailer they see online.
  • Increase social media engagement, helping a story gain momentum
  • For a series, a trailer can hint towards future installments, building hype for not only the current story but the sequels that come after.
  • A great introduction for bookstore or event displays, book signings, and virtual launch events for attendees or passerby.
  • Reach global audiences if a book is launched in several regions or languages, a visual storytelling can assist in crossing language barriers.
